Step into the McMenamins Edgefield, where vintage charm and eerie history intertwine on 74 acres of gardens, halls, and hidden stories. Once a poor farm and infirmary, today this vibrant resort invites guests to dine, drink, and dream alongside the lingering spirits of its past residents. From mysterious footsteps in moonlit hallways to flickering lights in Room 215, every night at Edgefield holds the possibility of a ghostly encounter wrapped in Oregon hospitality.
Hotel History
The site originally opened in 1911 as the Multnomah County Poor Farm, located in Troutdale, Oregon. It provided housing, work and care for people in need — the indigent, elderly, and mentally ill — who would live and work on the surrounding farmland.
The property evolved over time: by the 1930s it included an infirmary built in 1934.
In 1964 the main lodge became a nursing-home facility (Edgefield Manor) and a building on site served emotionally-disturbed children.
After years of decline, vandalism and neglect in the 1980s the property was purchased in 1990 by the brothers Mike McMenamin and Brian McMenamin. They transformed the site into a resort-hotel destination including lodging, restaurants, bars, a brewery, winery, spa and golf course, while preserving much of the historic architecture.
Today Edgefield is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and draws visitors for both its amenities and its historic past.

Haunted Hot Spots & Paranormal Activity
Because of its former lives — as a poor farm, infirmary, nursing home and institution — Edgefield has developed a strong reputation for paranormal activity. Here are the most often recounted haunted areas and phenomena:
Room 215
This room is frequently cited as the most haunted on the property.
Reports include:
Guests feeling cold noses pressed into their faces while asleep.
Unexpected pushes on the back, items flung out of windows or closets, feeling that the space is unsettled.
During renovation a pentagram made of animal bones was reportedly found in or near this room, strengthening its haunted lore.
Winery / Infirmary Area / Second & Third Floors
The building that now houses the winery was once the infirmary for the poor farm; ghosts of nurses or caregivers in old-fashioned uniforms have been reported.
Guests on the 2nd and 3rd floors report hearing footsteps, doors moving, cold spots and the feeling of being watched.
Outdoor grounds: Because many residents lived out and died on-site, including unmarked graves, the gardens and tree-lined paths are often noted in ghost-stories.
Additional Paranormal Activity
Apparitions: For example a woman in white, or the silhouette of a nurse walking the hallway.
Poltergeist-type activity: Lights turning on/off, objects moving, footsteps in empty rooms.
Guest books at the front desk where visitors record supernatural experiences.
