Tucked into a quiet street in Salem, Massachusetts, The Coach House marries Victorian elegance with a whisper of the spectral. Once a sea-captain’s carriage house and later a boutique inn, its walls hold stories of past lives—some now lingering. If you’re the kind of guest who seeks historic charm and the thrill of a ghostly presence, this is the haunted hideaway that invites both comfort and a little goose-bump.
Brief Hotel History
The Coach House was built in 1879 by sea captain Ephraim Augustus Emerton.
Located at 284 Lafayette Street, Salem, MA 01970.
Originally the “coach house” for a larger estate: where horse-drawn carriages and related staff were housed. Later it was converted into a boutique inn, refurbished to combine historic architecture with modern luxury.
Today it markets itself as a stylish boutique hotel that nonetheless retains its historic roots and, for those inclined, a haunted atmosphere.

Haunted Hot Spots & Paranormal Activity Reported
While the Coach House does not boast deeply documented investigation reports with room numbers and full case files that many larger haunted hotels offer, it is widely recognized in haunted-tour literature and paranormal guest blogs as having active spirits. Key claimed phenomena:
Lobby / Main Foyer: According to a guest blog, a spirit identifying herself as “Lizzie” (a child around 4-6 years old) communicated via EMF detector and chandelier flickers during a séance in the main foyer.
Upper Floors / Guest Rooms: Several guests reported hearing children’s laughter, footsteps when no one was in the hall, and lights or chandeliers flickering unexpectedly.
Throughout the Building: The property being old and multiple times refurbished means architecture contains hidden spaces and original features: ghost-tour write-ups note cold spots, subtle whispers, and unexplained movement of objects.
