Built in 1907 from hand-cut stone, Hotel La Rose is one of Santa Rosa’s most cherished landmarks and a proud member of the Historic Hotels of America. Located in the city’s Railroad Square Historic District, the hotel blends Old-World elegance with modern comfort.
Hotel History
Built in 1907 to replace an earlier hotel destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake; it was constructed by Italian stonemasons using local andesite and intended as a sturdy, fire-resistant stone hotel for railroad travelers.
The La Rose is the largest of the stone buildings in Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square, has retained much of its historic appearance, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and later added to the Historic Hotels of America program.
Architecturally notable features include thick stone walls and period interior elements; the lobby reportedly contains a stair section from a San Francisco cable-car barn. The hotel remains an active downtown property and local landmark.

Haunted Hote Spots & Paranormal Activity
Multiple local guides, guest reports and paranormal listings repeat a handful of recurring stories. While anecdotal and not verified, these are the commonly reported phenomena:
Ghostly woman in a nightgown — several guests and reviewers claim to have seen or sensed a female apparition drifting through closed doors or down hallways, often in the early morning hours. (This is one of the most-cited sightings in visitor reports.) californiahauntedhouses.com+1
Ghost children searching for parents — some paranormal writeups describe hearing or seeing the sounds/figures of two children, said to be wandering the building.
Room-specific stories (Room 31 and other rooms) — at least one user-submitted report specifically names Room 31, describing an unexplained fall and other odd occurrences that the reviewer linked to paranormal activity. Other TripAdvisor/Yelp reviews include personal accounts of strange noises, cold spots, flickering lights, unexplained bangs, and doors opening or shutting.
Odd physical occurrences — reviewers have reported things like sudden hot-water blasts, fogging mirrors, abrupt temperature drops and footsteps when no one is present. These sorts of details appear in multiple guest reviews and local “haunted places” summaries.
